CNN prime-time anchor Chris Cuomo has tested positive for the coronavirus. The Cuomo Prime Time made the announcement via Twitter on Tuesday morning. Cuomoanchored his 9 p.m. Eastern hour on Monday from his home, and he says he will continue to do so as long as he is feeling well.

In his daily coronavirus briefing, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York mentioned his brother’s diagnosis, saying he’s a “sweet, beautiful guy” and “my best friend.” The governor joked “he’s strong—not as strong as he thinks.”

Chris Cuomo, on Twitter, said that he’s “had fever, chills and shortness of breath” and that he’s been “quarantined in my basement,” where he will do his CNN and radio shows. “I just hope I didn’t give it to the kids and Cristina,” he added.

The basement “studio” that Cuomo is confined to can be seen in clips from Monday night, including a back-and-forth debate over Donald Trump between Cuomo and CNN’s Don Lemon:

UNITED ‘CONFIDENT’ OF SIGNING SAUL

Given the financial and logistical crisis currently facing European football, many feel this summer’s transfer market will be quieter than usual. The tabloids, however, seem to think the big hitters will still make it rain…

The Daily Star is pushing a line this morning around Manchester United’s growing belief over landing Saul Niguez. Apparently, Ed Woodward is confident of getting a deal done which would see the Red Devils pay £135million to activate the 25-year-old’s release clause.

Saul is three years into a nine-year contract but Atletico Madrid have been trying to get the midfielder to discuss new terms that would increase that release clause – which a cynic might suggest is the reason United’s name is being dragged into his situation.

But this report reckons United have identified Saul as the perfect replacement for Paul Pogba, should Real Madrid finally stump up for the want-away star who hasn’t started for United since September.

ARSENAL AND LIVERPOOL STRIKERS ON REAL HIT-LIST

But Pogba might be concerned to learn that Real have other plans for whatever transfer kitty Florentino Perez can muster. It seems Zinedine Zidane wants a centre-forward and the Real coach has a hitlist…

According to the Daily Express, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang features among Real’s options. Zidane has already spoken with the Arsenal striker, who has only a year remaining on his contract.

But in that conversation, Aubameyang has been informed that he is not Real’s first choice. Their primary target is Erling Haaland, who has had a belting three and a half months at Borussia Dortmund. The Germans could land a profit worth in excess of £30million on the £18million they paid RB Leipzig over New Year.

Aubameyang isn’t even Plan B. Real’s preferred alternative would be Sadio Mane – but the Liverpool star would cost almost three times what Haaland might if they are right in thinking the Senegal star could be prised away from Anfield for £140million.

South Africa on Friday reported its first two deaths from the novel coronavirus outbreak as the number of confirmed cases breached the 1,000 mark, the government said.“This morning we wake South Africans up with sad news that we now have our first deaths resulting from COVID-19,” Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said in a statement. He said the two people died in the Western Cape province, as the country went under a nationwide 21-day lockdown that took effect at midnight. The minister promised to release more details later “when we announce the latest confirmed COVID-19 cases, which have increased from yesterday’s number and have tipped the 1,000 mark”.On Friday, the country reported 927 confirmed cases, a more than 30 percent jump from the previous day.In a bid to halt the spread, some 57 million people have been ordered to stay at home during the three-week total lockdown. But many people defied the order — going about business as usual while some lined up outside food stores or queing up for transport at bus terminals on Friday morning.

The US has charged Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro and other senior officials in the country with drug trafficking crimes.

The move, which will increase tensions between the two nations, was announced by Attorney General William Barr.

The US also offered a $15m (£12.5m) reward for any information leading to Mr Maduro’s arrest.

It has long accused him of leading a corrupt and brutal regime, a charge he has repeatedly rejected.

By a vote of 96-0, the Senate passed a massive $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus compromise package just before midnight Wednesday, ending days of deadlock and sending the bill to the House of Representatives — which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said will soon take up the historic measure to bring relief to individuals, small businesses, and larger corporations “with strong bipartisan support.”

The 880-page legislation is the largest economic relief bill in U.S. history. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., appeared somber and exhausted as he announced the vote. He released senators from Washington until April 20, though he promised to recall them if needed.

“96-0 in the United States Senate,” President Trump wrote on Twitter. “Congratulations AMERICA!”

The unanimous vote came despite misgivings on both sides about whether it goes too far or not far enough. The vote capped days of difficult negotiations as Washington confronted a national challenge unlike any it has ever faced. Unemployment numbers were set to be revealed Thursday morning, and experts warned they could reach alarming new highs.

The package would provide one-time direct payments to Americans of $1,200 per adult making up to $75,000 a year, and $2,400 to married couples making up to $150,000, with $500 payments per child. After a $75,000 threshold for individuals, the benefit would be reduced by $5 for each $100 the taxpayer makes. A similar $150,000 threshold applies to couples, and a $112,500 threshold for heads of households.

The legislation passed by the Senate will use 2019 tax returns, if available, or 2018 tax returns to assess income for determining how much direct financial aid individuals receive. Those who did not file tax returns can use a Form SSA-1099, Social Security Benefit Statement or Form RRB-1099, a Social Security Equivalent Benefit Statement, per Page 149 of the bill.

Further, the bill allocates $250 billion to extend unemployment insurance to more workers, and lengthen the duration to 39 weeks, up from the normal 26 weeks. $600 extra a week would be provided for four months. (Just before voting on the final package began late Wednesday, the Senate was debating an amendment from Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., to bar people from getting more from new unemployment benefits than they would have received on the job; the amendment needed 60 votes and failed 48-48.)

The final package would additionally provide $349 billion in loans to small businesses — and money spent on rent, payroll and utilities becomes grants that don’t need to be paid back. Many hotels would qualify as small businesses under the plan.

Passenger airlines would receive $25 billion for workers’ “salaries and benefits,” plus up to $25 billion more in loan guarantees and loans. Contract workers would also receive $3 billion in assistance. Airlines would have to agree not to furlough workers until at least the end of September in return.

The head of the World Health Organization on Wednesday praised President Trump for his leadership in handling the novel coronavirus outbreak and said the president is “taking responsibility” for leading the United States’ response to the global pandemic.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the United Nations health agency has repeatedly called for the heads of state to lead a “whole of government” response to COVID-19 and said Trump was leading by example.

“That’s exactly what he’s doing, which we appreciate because fighting this pandemic needs political commitment,” Tedros said during an afternoon press briefing in Geneva.

Tedros said he and Trump had recently spoken and that the president is “doing all he can.”

“I believe that kind of political commitment and political leadership can bring change or can stop this pandemic,” Tedros said.

During the virtual press conference, Tedros called COVID-19 “Public Enemy No. 1,” and warned that if some countries don’t get serious about putting safety measures in place, the world could see thousands of additional casualties.

He added that wide-scale efforts to slow the coronavirus should have started weeks ago.

“It’s a dangerous virus,” Tedros said. “We had been saying to the world the window of opportunity is narrowing and the time to act was actually more than a month ago, two months ago.”

Tedros instructed countries that have locked down their populations to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to use the time to “find and attack the virus.”

“Asking people to stay at home and shutting down population movement is buying time, and reducing pressure on health systems. On their own, these measures won’t extinguish epidemics,” he said.

Nations need to expand, train and deploy their health care and public health workers, Tedros said, and encouraged them to ramp up testing and track down every suspected case of the coronavirus within their borders.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the global death toll has surpassed the 20,000 mark.

Tedros said he believes the death toll will rise even higher.

“The question is how large a price we will pay,” he said.

The WHO has been under fire for waiting for weeks before declaring the coronavirus outbreak a global pandemic. It then raised the ire of many countries including the United States by praising China for its handling of the coronavirus.

If you say the truth you die! If you keep quiet, you die! One of the most popular phrases

used by a politician in Nigerian senate”.

Politics in Nigeria has never been so badly represented like it is now, when all the country

ever needed was freedom from oppression with a civilian government as its best bet, where

the rights of each citizen is supposed to matter in all times irrespective of their view point,

desires and or aspirations as in the case of NNAMDI KANU the leader of the indigenous

people of Biafra(IPOB). Firstly, let us highlight some key occurrences in

the past few years before making the case for Nnamdi Kanu and the Biafran struggle.

Freedom of expression is one of the key human rights given to all by God and supposedly

adopted by global human right conventions; right to free speech, gather, protest and the

right to express various political views as you so wish without fear. A great phenonium that

reflects the beauty of life which is seen as the hallmark of democracy worldwide.

In the last few months of the then Goodluck Jonathan Government, he made a bold

statement that would forever live in the memories of all Nigerians. Let me paraphrase here

“When I am gone you will know the value of freedom and the right to freedom of

expression which you have all enjoyed during my tenure as President “. He afforded everyone the right to say and express their views as they so choose which to so many of his allies was the reason for his down fall; not shutting people up like the past Military

Government. He was labelled the most abused President of Nigeria in Morden times when

all his fellow Presidents and Head of states in other African Nations were doing the

opposite. Fast forward to the current administration, things turned on its head even worst

than the days of the Military Regime in my view and so many others across the country and

the world at large. In this current administration, we have seen people disappear, killed,

Jailed, blackmailed and their means of livelihood destroyed just for

expressing their views either online, television or written opinions and protest. Just to mention but a few; SENATOR ABARIBE,SENATOR DINO MILAYE,SOWORE, DEJI, and few

Days ago an Emir became the latest casualty, he was removed and dethroned because of

what he represents and for expressing his views on issues that concern all Nigerians which

does not favour the ruling class aside others that are unheard of at the moment.

They have raised a crazy bill to silent the people’s right to express themselves called hate

speech bill targeted at everyone criticizing them which was supposed to be punishable by

death but was only withdrawn because of international pressure. However, when Nigerians felt they had seen the last of this, a new bill has just been introduced with the purpose of online censorship, trying to stop short Nigerians from expressing their views online especially on Facebook aside other means and platform. In the case of Nnamdi Kanu, the Biafran effort is long overdue, especially when it became clear

that the Nigerian project was not achieving its main objectives of inclusiveness and the igbos were treated as a second class political football aside all the atrocities and genocide committed

by the Nigerian government and their allies during the civil war that saw close to 3millions

people losing their lives, which can never be erased from the memory of all Biafrans both

young and old, an experience that will live with my mother and father till they die. A man’s desire for change which is his right to seek in a million years can never be deemed

dangerous because he refused to stay with the status quo and therefore became a target for

the ruling political class for expressing his views about what he thinks and believes is right for

his people (the actualization of the sovereign state of Biafra).

Mr. Kanu soon found himself in jail for more than a year with the current government

defying all court orders for his release and acting above the law and disregarding judicial

precedents as stipulated in the Nigerian constitution, but after securing his release months

later, he became a target for assassination which he narrowly escaped. Few who were with him when the attack took place lost their lives in the process. Since then they have been countless killings with no accountability or repercussion for those security agents assigned to carry such operations, instead they have had strong government backing with impunity,

While Nnamdi has not been able to step his feet in his homeland , he was faced with more

dead threats and was denied access to even return and bury his parents who passed away

months after his escape from the hand of the Nigerian security forces. The Nigerian government even rejected all request for him to be allowed to return and pay his last

respects. So much for ” freedom of expression” that is supposed to m be the core of a democracy which we claim to be. Yes, you can disagree with him on what he stands for but he has the right to express his believes and even carry then out in a peaceful way which is what he seek to do in accordance to UN statutes in referendum. Therefore, no one should be

denied this core basic human right, an ordeal which I have also experienced myself for just speaking the truth some years back.

It is time for the Nigerian government to have a rethink and let the core of democratic

process and its benefits, as enshrined in the law prevail (human dignity and freedom of

expression). Let us all be clear here, holding different views on policies or holding our

elected officials to account doesn’t amount to crime.

Human right and freedom of expression is what the government owe it’s citizens, Nnamdi

deserves better ,so also does everyone supporting him both home and abroad, including other

Nigerians who have views on issues different from Mr. Kanu. No one should be afraid to

travel home for fear of being killed or jailed for expressing their views.

To all Nigerians home and abroad, to the international community who helped stop the

last bill and to all Politicians currently serving . Please stop this madness, it is time to put your money where your mouth is for truly the proof they say is in the pudding.

Think progress! Think forward

Mozambican immigration officers have found 64 dead bodies in a shipping container on the back of a lorry that had crossed into Mozambique from Malawi, officials say.It is suspected that the dead, thought to be Ethiopian, suffocated, the authorities told the BBC.Two people, including the vehicle’s driver, have been detained in connection with the deaths. The migrants were on a well-known trafficking route to South Africa. When officials inspected the vehicle, 14 people were found alive. The immigration service had stopped the container truck in the town of Moatize, according to Tete provincial director of health, Carla Mosse. She said investigations were ongoing to discover how the occupants died, but said asphyxiation was the likely cause of death.Amélia Direito, spokesperson for the National Migration Service in Tete, said the driver had not wanted to stop the vehicle when asked. She explained that her colleagues had heard noises from the lorry and suspected that migrants might be inside.Referring to the trafficking of migrants she said: “This is a worrying situation. We are continuing to tighten the control of the border.”Some of the 14 survivors were hitting the container and screaming, reports the Portuguese newspaper Observador.Danilson Goncalves, head of public health in Tete, said a team of medical examiners would carry-out autopsies to determine the exact cause of death.

The Next Senate Vote On The Coronavirus Bill Is At 9:45 AM On Monday. It will be shortly after the opening of the stock market, and it is designed to get the nation through the next 3 months.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi is responsible for stopping the bill on Sunday and says the House will pass its own legislation and it will reflect her priorities. 60 votes are needed for passage but on Sunday the GOP had only 47.

The number of “aye” votes was especially low because five Republicans are quarantined over coronavirus fears.

Senate Democrats blocked the $1.8 trillion coronavirus bill from moving forward on Sunday night. They did so even though the legislation is aimed at arresting the economy’s precipitous decline, and households and businesses fretting about an uncertain future.

The stock market appears poised for another sharp drop.

The Trump administration and the GOP are scrambling to address a spike in layoffs and businesses are gasping as millions of Americans stay home to avoid contagion.

Much of the U.S. economy is frozen as Americans stay home and cut back on spending.

The stock market has lost 10,000 points in six weeks and 3 million people filed for unemployment benefits last week alone.

Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis says the unemployment rate could hit 30 percent between April and June because of mass layoffs, which would be worse than what occurred during the Great Depression.

The bill is designed to flood the economy with money in an effort to protect millions of jobs and businesses that now appear to be on the brink.

It would direct payments of $1,200 to most American adults and $500 to children.

It would steer $350 billion towards small businesses to stem the tide of layoffs, and push billions more towards hospitals and the unemployment insurance system. And it would create a massive, $500 billion program for businesses, states, and localities.

The legislation also includes about $100 billion for hospitals and about $250 billion to beef up state unemployment insurance programs.

“Senator Rand Paul has tested positive for COVID-19,” Paul’s account tweeted. “He is feeling fine and is in quarantine. He is asymptomatic and was tested out of an abundance of caution due to his extensive travel and events. He was not aware of any direct contact with any infected person.”

“He expects to be back in the Senate after his quarantine period ends and will continue to work for the people of Kentucky at this difficult time,” the thread continued. “Ten days ago, our D.C. office began operating remotely, hence virtually no staff has had contact with Senator Rand Paul.”
