A COALITION of 122 countries are now supporting Australia’s call for an independent probe to investigate the causes of the coronavirus pandemic that started in Wuhan, China
But, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has felt the wrath of Beijing, after China threatened to decimate his country’s economy unless the inquiry initiative is dropped. The need for an inquiry will be voted on by 194 nations at the World Health Assembly on Tuesday. China has increased its belligerent threats towards Australia with a suggestion they may place a crippling tariff on barley exports.
The wording of the inquiry so far fails to mention China, but the nuances all point to an effort to uncover attempts by Beijing to cover-up the outbreak at the early stages.
The UK has signed up to support the inquiry and British Foreign Office spokesman said: “There will need to be a review into the pandemic, not least so that we can ensure we are better prepared for future global pandemics.
“The resolution at the World Health Assembly is an important step towards this.”
The pandemic has caused world economies to fall into recession, with many questioning why they should repay the sovereign debt they owe China after the disease spread from Wuhan because of Beijing’s lack of transparency.
At present global cases of infection have surged over 4.7 million, with 313,713 dead and million still sick with the disease.
Australia’s inquiry efforts are now backed by the entire 27-member European Union.

As Covid-19 continues to spread across the US, President Donald Trump has given governors guidance on reopening state economies in the coming months.
The guidelines for “Opening up America Again” outline three phases for states to gradually ease their lockdowns.
Mr Trump promised governors they would be handling the process themselves, with help from the federal government.
There has been a mixed reception to the plans, with a leading Democrat calling them vague and inconsistent.
The US currently has 654,301 confirmed cases and 32,186 deaths due to the virus, and Mr Trump has suggested some states could reopen this month.
He said that a prolonged lockdown risked inflicting a serious toll on public health. He warned of a “sharp rise” in drug abuse, alcohol abuse, heart disease, and other “physical and mental” problems.
Mr Trump told reporters that healthy citizens would be able to return to work “as conditions allow”. He said Americans would continue to be called upon to maintain social distancing measures and to stay home if they are unwell.

He said that reopening the US economy would be done “one careful step at a time” but he called on state governors to move “very, very quickly, depending on what they want to do”.
Shortly afterwards, leading Democrat Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, called the new guidelines “vague and inconsistent”.
She said the document did “nothing to make up for the president’s failure to listen to the scientists and produce and distribute national rapid testing”.

China’s Ambassador to Israel, Du Wei, has been found dead in his apartment north of Tel Aviv, an Israeli official told BBC News.
The official said Israeli police had launched an investigation but initial findings suggested no foul play.
Mr Du, 57, was only appointed ambassador in February having previously served as envoy to Ukraine.
The ambassador was married and had a son but his family had still to join him in Israel.
He was living in the Tel Aviv suburb of Herzliya.
An Israeli police spokesman told Reuters news agency: “As part of the regular procedure, police units are at the scene.”
Israel’s Channel 12 TV, quoting unnamed medical sources, said initial indications were that Mr Du had died in his sleep of natural causes.
In a message published on the embassy’s website just after his appointment as ambassador, Mr Du praised the relations between “the second largest economy in the world and Israel the start-up nation”.
When he arrived in Israel on 15 February, Mr Du had immediately to self-isolate for two weeks because of coronavirus restrictions.
In an interview with Israeli newspaper Makor Rishon last month, Mr Du said China was being made the world’s scapegoat.
“In history, more than once, a certain group of people was accused of spreading pandemics,” he said.
“That is despicable and should be condemned. The disease is an enemy of the entire humankind and the world should fight it together.”
On Friday, his embassy made a scathing attack on US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who had criticised China’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic on a visit to Israel.
In a response published in the Jerusalem Post, the embassy condemned Mr Pompeo’s “absurd comments”, denying that China had ever covered up the crisis.

Shoppers waiting outside the supermarket applauded officers when Sansom was arrested at about 14:40 BST.
He was jailed for 20 weeks at Oxford Magistrates’ Court.
Sansom, of Victoria Road, Haringey, London, admitted one count of theft and a racially aggravated public order offence.
He also pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker and using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of or provoke unlawful violence.
Supt Joe Kidman, of Thames Valley Police, said: “I am very pleased that we’ve seen swift and robust justice in this case.
“Sansom is now in jail following his vile actions on Monday against shop staff and our police officers, who were all doing their job to serve our community.
“It is a salutary reminder of the particular dangers that police officers face at this time.”

He died on Monday after being hospitalised following COVID-19 complications.

She said her 1970-born brother had underlying health conditions before contracting the lethal virus.
She added that his late brother left a son, Louis.
“We said goodbye to my brother, Gian, on Monday. He had COVID-19 combined with underlying health conditions.

President Trump announced at the White House coronavirus news briefing in the Rose Garden on Tuesday that the United States will immediately halt all funding for the World Health Organization (WHO), saying it had put “political correctness over lifesaving measures.”
Also at the briefing, the president said plans to ease the national economic shutdown were being finalized, and that he would be “authorizing governors to reopen their states to reopen as they see fit.” At the same time, Trump made clear that he was not going to put “any pressure” on governors to reopen.
Trump read a long list of names of people in business, health care and sports who will advise him on how to restart the economy. “We have to get our sports back,” Trump remarked. “I’m tired of watching baseball games that are 14 years old.”
In the meantime, Trump declared that the United States would undertake a 60-to-90 day investigation into why the “China-centric” WHO had caused “so much death” by “severely mismanaging and covering up” the coronavirus’ spread, including by making the “disastrous” decision to oppose travel restrictions on China.
The United States is the WHO’s largest single donor, and the State Department had previously planned to provide the agency $893 million in the current two-year funding period. Trump said the United States contributes roughly $400 to $500 million per year to WHO, while China offers only about $40 million. The money saved will go to areas that “most need it,” Trump asserted.

Rap mogul Kanye West reiterated his support for President Trump in a new interview, saying he is “definitely voting” in the November election and refuses to let others tell him how to vote because of his skin color.
“I buy real estate,” Mr. West told GQ in a Jan. 30 interview published Wednesday. “It’s better now than when Obama was in office. They don’t teach you in school about buying property. They teach you how to become somebody’s property.
I’m definitely voting this time,” he said. “And we know who I’m voting on. And I’m not going to be told by the people around me and the people that have their agenda that my career is going to be over.
