Nasarawa State Governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, has expressed confidence that the future of the state lies in oil and gas, essentially because of the miraculous discovery of commercial quantity of hydrocarbons in parts of the state.

Engineer Sule disclosed this while playing host to elders of the Alago nation who were on a courtesy call at the Government House, on Wednesday.

According to the Governor, Nasarawa State is blessed when it comes to the area of oil and gas, following the discovery that the initial discovery of hydrocarbons in Keana has extended into some areas in the Benue trough into Obi, Agwatashi and Aloshi parts of the state.

Based on his experience from the oil and gas industry, he described as amazing and unprecedented, for coal deposits to foreshadow substantial oil and gas deposit as it was discovered in Agwatashi area of the state.

“They thought it was just going to be coal in that area but because of the presence of coal that is foreshadowing, and this is the first time in history, with my little knowledge of oil and gas, that I am seeing coal actually covering hydrocarbons and gas.

This is some amazing discovery that have not seen in other places. Believe me, I had the opportunity of seeing oil and gas activities in various states and that’s what took me to Ukraine. In Agwatashi area, the coal is now on top of the hydrocarbon. It’s a big oil. In engineering, it’s a beautiful thing for us,” he explained.

Engineer Sule used the opportunity of the visit to inform the Alago Elders that following concerted attempts by his administration to find use for the completed Lafia Cargo Airport, the efforts finally paid off with President Muhammadu Buhari announcing the decision by the Federal Government to takeover the facility.

Not only that, the Governor added that the Federal Government has agreed to fully compensate the state for the money expended in building the airport.

As the country gears towards the 2023 general elections, Engineer Sule formally announced his decision to retain his deputy, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe ahead of the coming governorship election.

He described Akabe as being honest, loyal and a professional like him, stressing that he is ready to swim and sink with his deputy.

Engineer Sule also made case for the Alago nation to belong to no other party than the All Progressives Congress (APC), especially that the nation is positioned to play critical role in the success of the party.

“I therefore call on you, that the Alago nation should have no other party than the APC. Because the truth of the matter is that God has been kind to you and God has been kind to APC by ensuring that we all these working for us,” he stated.

He told the Alago Elders that the Alago nation have more guarantee with the position of the deputy governor than a coming senator.

Engineer Sule equally called on the Alago nation to support the senatorial ambition of his immediate predecessor, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-makura, who is seeking to represent the zone for a second term.

“We will do our best as far as the party is concerned, to win this election. We are going to do everything possible within the context of the law to make sure we win this election. Because of that, if we are winning this election, I want to win the election with my brother Dr. Akabe,” he said.

Highlight of the event was when Engineer Sule presented Dr.Akabe with a copy of his nomination form.

In a chat with the Government House press crew shortly after receiving his nomination form, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe said he was overwhelmed by the show of love by his principal, relishing the words the Governor picked to describe him.

He expressed appreciation that all the while, the Governor has been noticing his modest contributions, adding that the decision to pick him on the second part of their journey is an added challenge for him to improve on what he has been doing.

“And I know the kind of person that he is, he requires nothing but the best. And today is a great day. I thank God for it. I thank everybody, all the people of Nasarawa State for their support for the past three and a half years. I know I can’t be perfect, no human being is perfect. But my modest contribution is being noted,” the Deputy Governor said.

In an introductory remarks, leader of the Alago Elders delegation, Senator Hussani Egyagbola, said they were at the Government House to congratulate the Governor on the successful conduct of the party’s primary elections, as well as his sterling performance during the national convention of the party.

Egyagbola said the Alago nation are particularly happy with Engineer Sule for building critical infrastructure such as the Agbashi road which has defied solutions by previous administrations, as well as the Assakio road.

He explained that the Alago nation deeply appreciate the Governor for attracting corporations and businesses to their land, especially the activities and exploration by the NNPC in Keana, Obi and Agwatashi.

Egyagbola pointed out the Alago Elders delegation cut across party lines because the Alago nation are happy with the present administration and assured that they will support Engineer Sule one hundred percent when the time comes.

The National Coordinator, Prince Moses Adebisi said that the group, with membership across the country, is committed to the Atiku project now more that ever before. Adding that the group was birthed to counter the errornous believe by some persons who feel they have the power to control the media in the South West.

According to him, Atiku project is a must for a person like him because he has been on it 2003 and in 2004 he got a response from his principal (Alhaji Atiku Abubakar).

Adebisi who said that they have to redouble their efforts, recalled that there was a slogan by Tinubu which he always maintain and say to people that after Atiku it’s his turn. He therefore called on the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress to wait until his principal- Atiku takes its turn first.

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has disclosed that a delegation from its Committee on Foreign Affairs would depart Nigeria for London on July 1, 2022, to pay a visit to Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, who are both presently in detention over an allegation of organ harvesting.

Lawan made this known on Wednesday, while giving details into the outcome of a closed session held by the upper chamber before the start of plenary proceedings.

The closed door session which started about 10:57 a.m ended at 11:49 a.m.

According to Lawan, the decision to wade into Ekweremadu’s arrest and detention was against the backdrop of a briefing received by the Nigerian High Commissioner to London.

He further disclosed that the Senate would engage the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nigerian High Commission in London on the recent arrest of Senator Ike Ekweremadu by the London Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom.

He said, “I had a personal engagement with our Nigerian High Commissioner to Britain, Alhaji Isola Sarafa, who has done so well to establish contact with our colleague, who has been able to get his team to be in the court at Uxbridge  where Ekweremadu was taken to.

“The high Commission has also been able to provide some consular services that include the engagement of some lawyers who will defend our colleague.

“We commend them for giving attention to the issue at stake. Equally, the Nigeria Foreign Affairs Minister has been engaged here, so that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs takes steps to provide diplomatic support for our colleague.

“Because this issue is already in court, we have limited opportunity to discuss beyond what we have done so far.

“But I want to ensure the family of our colleague, Senator Ike Ekweremadu and Nigerians, that the Senate will continue to engage with our ministry of foreign affairs as well as our high commission in London.

“The High Commission has done so much but we still expect that it will continue to provide any other further consular services.

“We have also mandated our committee on foreign affairs to engage with the British high commission here in Nigeria, to find more details on this case, as  as far as the high commission is involved.

“There will be a delegation to London to see Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife. A delegation from the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Senate will leave in the next two days to London for that purpose.

“I want to urge all all federal government institutions that can do anything to ensure that Justice prevails in this case, that they do so.”

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, dismissed a fresh application the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, filed to be released on bail, pending the determination of the treasonable felony charge the Federal Government preferred against him.

Kanu, who is currently facing a seven-count charge, had in the application he filed through his team of lawyers led by Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, equally challenge the revocation of the bail the court earlier granted to him.

He specifically urged the court to set aside the order it made on March 28, 2019, which not only issued a bench warrant for his arrest, but also gave FG the nod to try him in absentia.

The IPOB leader told the court that contrary to FG’s allegation that he jumped bail, he said that he fled for his life after his home town at Afaraukwu Ibeku in Umuahia, Abia State, was invaded by soldiers, which he said led to the death of 28 persons.

Contending that he was denied fair hearing before his bail was revoked, Kanu, attached eight exhibits that included photographs, as well as an affidavit he deposed to from Isreal after he fled from the country.

Meanwhile, dismissing the bail request on Tuesday, trial Justice Binta Nyako, said she was not satisfied with the reason the IPOB leader gave for his failure to appear in court for continuation of his trial.

The trial judge noted that from records of the court, Kanu, was represented by his lawyer on the day his bail was revoked, likewise his sureties.

“In fact, he sureties told the court that they did not know the whereabout of the Defendant and even applied to be discharged from the matter.

“Therefore, the Defendant was not denied fair hearing”.

Besides, Justices Nyako held that though a court could vacate a previous order when confronted with a cogent and verifiable reason, “in the instant case, I have not been given any, neither have I been given any reason to set-aside the order.

“The present application amounts to an abuse of court process for attempting to relitigate an issue already decided by the court.

“If the Defendant is dissatisfaction, he has the Appeal Court to go to.

“This application is accordingly dismissed”, Justice Nyako held.

It will be recalled that the court had also on March 18, declined to release the embattled IPOB leader on bail.

The court maintained that Kanu must explain the reason why he breached the previous bail that was given to him, before he could enjoy another favourable discretion from it.

“Until the issue of the absence of the defendant for his trial, with all the bail conditions breached, is determined, the instant application of the defendant for bail will at best be premature and it is refused.

“However, the defendant is at liberty to re-file the application”, Justice Nyako added.

…seeks measures to avert crisis in Judiciary

The Senate has mandated the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, to go ahead with the probe of the crisis in the Judiciary by looking into the complaints raised in the petition by the Justices of the Supreme Court.

It also tasked the Committee to interface with the three arms of government, as well as at the Bar and on the Bench to collate aggregate views and positions on the short term, medium term and long term measures needed to decisively address the crisis facing the Judiciary.

According to the Senate, such measures must include the immediate fiscal intervention as well as long term and sustainable budgetary allocations, required for the optimal performance of the Judiciary, in line with global best practices.

These were resolutions reached by the Senate, sequel to a motion brought to the floor by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central).

Coming under Order 41 and 51 of the Senate Standing Orders 2022, as amended, Senator Bamidele recalled that the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, last week, drew the attention of the chamber to media reports on the state of affairs in the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

He noted that poor welfare of Judicial Officers would adversely affect the output of Judiciary in service delivery.

According to the lawmaker, “the Judiciary, which is the epicentre of the temple of justice, should be preserved by the Senate through appropriate legislative measures in order to safeguard this highly revered institution and prevent it from being ridiculed.”

He stated that the Committee, in taking steps to look into the matter as directed by the Senate President, has started the process of making arrangement to interface with relevant stakeholders both at the Bar and on the Bench.

He said that the resignation of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammed, on Sunday 27th June, 2022, “will not prevent the committee from going ahead with it’s assignment in the quest to find a probable lasting solution to the matter.”

Opeyemi noted that, “even though Hon. Justice Tanko Muhammed has stepped down as CJN, most of the Issues raised by the Justices of the Supreme Court and other stakeholders within the Judiciary, still remain and need to be addressed urgently to prevent an eventual shut down of the Judiciary.”

The Senate has passed five bills from the House of Representatives for concurrence.

The bills include Public Enterprises (Privatization and Commercialization) Act (Repeal & Enactment) Bill, 2022; and Orthopaedic Hospitals Management Board  Act (Amendment) Bill, 2022.

Others are Chartered Institute of Social Work Practitioners (Establishment) Bill, 2022; Nigeria Council for Social Work (Establishment) Bill, 2022; and Chartered Institute of Professional Secretarial of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2022.

The five bills, sponsored by the Deputy Senate Leader, Ajayi Boroffice, were passed after consideration by the Committee of the Whole.

In a related development, the Senate, on Tuesday, passed the Nigeria Postal Services (Repeal and are-enactment) Bill, 2022.

Also passed were the Chartered Institute of Public Administration of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2022; and Raw Materials Research and Development Council Act 2004 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2022.

The three bills were passed after re-committal to the Committee of the Whole.

The motion for recommittal was sponsored by the Deputy Senate Leader, Ajayi Boroffice.

Boroffice, in his presentation, observed that “some fundamental issues which require fresh legislative action by both Chambers of the National Assembly emerged after a critical analysis of the bills by Mr. President C – in – C.”

He said that a Technical Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives and Directorate of Legal Services met and worked on the bills.

The Senate, relying on Order 1(b) and Order 52(6) of the Standing Order, 2022 as amended, rescinded its decision on the bills as passed and re-committed same to the Committee of the Whole for consideration and passage.

Meanwhile, two bills seeking to  establish the Council for Certification of Professional Counselors in Nigeria; and Federal College of Agricultural Technology Opialu-Ojapo on Tuesday, have passed second reading in the Senate.

The bills were sponsored by Senators Ovie Omo-Agege (APC, Delta Central) and Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South).

The bills were both referred by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, to the Committees on Establishment and Public Service Matters; and Agriculture and Rural Development, respectively, for further legislative inputs.

The Committees were both given four weeks to submit their reports to the Senate for consideration.

The names of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and former Minister of Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio, were conspicuously missing as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the names of the successfully nominated candidates of the 18 political parties on Friday.

For the purposes of claims and objections, forms and particulars of presidential candidates were slated to be published on Friday, at the INEC headquarters in Abuja while those of senatorial candidates were pasted at its offices across the federation.

With the exception of presidential candidates’ particulars missing on the INEC notice board in Abuja as scheduled, names of senatorial candidates nominated by parties were confirmed and published at the state level by PREMIUM TIMES.

Despite not participating in the senatorial primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in May, Messrs Lawan and Akpabio were controversially nominated as its candidates for Yobe North and Akwa-Ibom Northwest respectively ahead of the 2023 poll.

In place of the duo who were then entwined in the race for the APC presidential ticket, Bashir Machina and Udom Ekpoudom had emerged for the Yobe North and Akwa-Ibom Northwest in primaries respectively supervised by INEC officials.

While there have been some controversies around Mr Akpabio’s ‘backdoor’ emergence, Mr Machina has continuously vowed not to step down for the Senate President, Mr Lawan.

Machina, Ekpoudom’s names also missing
As the window to either officially accept or reject the names of the two “ineligible” APC chieftains closes, sources at the INEC office in Akwa-Ibom and Yobe told PREMIUM TIMES that both the names of Messrs Machina and Ekpoudom were not also submitted by the party.

Calls and text messages to the INEC spokesperson, Festus Okoye, by PREMIUM TIMES on Friday, to clarify some of the knotty issues around the candidacy were not honoured at the time of filing this report

However, when contacted, the Head of Voter Education and Publicity at the INEC office, Damaturu, Yobe State, Rifkatu Duku, confirmed that Mr Lawan’s name was not on the list.

She said the party does not have a candidate for Yobe North Senatorial District.

“We do not have any name from the APC, so their slot is empty. I guess the party is still trying to sort one or two things.

“I can categorically tell you that their (Messrs Lawan or Machina)names are not pasted,” Ms Duku told PREMIUM TIMES on phone on Friday.

If INEC throws out the names of Messrs Akpabio and Lawan from the submitted list, as stipulated in Section 84(13) of the Electoral Act for such a case, the APC may as well risk not fielding candidates for the Yobe North and Akwa-Ibom North-west senatorial seats in the 2023 general elections.

(Premium Times).

Some political parties in the North are secretly working for Labour Party Candidate , His Excellency, Governor Peter Obi.

This was the submission of the Labour Party member in Katsina State, Honourable Ibrahim Abu Musawa.

According to him, “Labour party is the wind that is blowing now, it will be greater than the wind that blew in 2015 when President Muhammadu Buhari got into power.

“It is a stronger, bigger and greater reflection of that wind.  It’s a revolution that will change our political landscape.

“l believe the general election is going to be for Labour party because Labour party decided to produce the most competent person among all the presidential candidates who happen to be a younger and very sincere person. Somebody that is not an ethnic bigot.

He said it has become quite clear that “a president coming from our state did not stop people from being killed. So many Katsina citizens or natives of the state enter and sleep in their farms when it is 7pm and in the next morning they will come out to their families. So we don’t pray that such government should continue.

“We want a change that is a real change, that is change in nature, not change from one party to another, not change in words only. Change that will connive and betray people just to make yourself and your family happy. We don’t pray that such a change should come around again.

“That is why we are fully in support of Obi. It is not just us but even the APC and the whole political parties underground they are working for labour party not only in Katsina but in the entire part of the North.
