A Michigan judge’s decision to send a 15-year-old girl to juvenile detention for violating her probation by not completing her online schoolwork during the coronavirus lockdown has prompted protests and calls for her release.

The African-American teenager has reportedly been detained since mid-May.

Hundreds of students gathered outside her school and the court to show their support for the girl known as “Grace”.

The state’s supreme court said on Thursday it would review her case.

ProPublica highlighted Grace’s case in a report earlier this week . Following interviews with Grace’s mother, the news site described how the teenager had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and had already been struggling with behavioural issues.

She had been placed on probation in mid-April via a zoom juvenile court hearing after facing an assault and theft charge last year; one of the terms of the probation was a requirement to do her schoolwork.

ProPublica report that the start of Grace’s probation coincided with the first days of remote schoolwork, and she quickly became overwhelmed without the in-person support of her teachers.

At a mid-May hearing at the Oakland County Family Court Division to decide whether Grace had violated her probation, Judge Mary Ellen Brennan found the girl “guilty on failure to submit to any schoolwork and getting up for school” and called Grace a “threat to the community” because of the previous charges against her, ProPublica reports. Judge Brennan has so far not commented publicly on the ruling.

Fellow students and her teachers at Groves High School, in the Detroit suburb of Beverly Hills, came out in her support at a rally on Thursday, and several thousand people have signed online petitions calling for her release.

A lot of people were behind on their work this semester, no one had motivation to do anything because the teachers weren’t teaching and we were all online. I know so many people that didn’t do their homework,” 18-year-old student Prudence Canter told Reuters news agency.

Social studies teacher Geoff Wickersham told Reuters: “It didn’t seem like the judge or the caseworker knew how grades and due dates and things were structured during the pandemic shutdown in the spring. I think this is a huge injustice.”

“Black Lives Matter” signs were held up alongside “Free Grace” signs.

“I know if Grace was a 15-year-old white girl she would not be sitting in juvenile detention right now,” a mother, Sheri Crawley, told local TV news station WDIV.

Michigan’s Supreme Court said on Thursday it would review Grace’s case after lawyers for the teenager filed a motion seeking an emergency review.

“The State Court Administrative Office is working with the Oakland Circuit Court to examine the processes in this case,” John Nevin, the court’s communications’ director, said in a statement.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday arraigned two Bureau de Change operators for allegedly laundering $1.6m, said to be proceeds of smuggling.

The defendants – Chris Ogbonna, Sulaiman Jibbo – were arraigned alongside two firms – Kur and Sule Nigeria Enterprises; and Sunchrist Trans Nigeria Limited – on five counts before Justice Ayokunle Faji.

The anti-graft agency said they ought to have reasonably known that the $1.6m, which they allegedly removed from jurisdiction sometime in 2017, “formed parts of proceeds of unlawful activity, to wit: smuggling”.

Ogbonna and Sunchrist Trans Nigeria Limited were also accused of transferring a total of N607.2m, being proceeds of smuggling, to Kur and Sule Enterprises

Jibbo, on his part, was accused of making a cash payment of $52,287 to one Fredrick, “which sum exceeded the amount authorised by law”.

The prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, Kufre Uduak, told the court that the defendants acted contrary to sections 18(c), 15(2), 1(a), and 16(1) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 and they were liable to punishment under sections 15(3) and 16(2)(b) of the same law.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Following a bail application by their counsel, Chuks Nwana, Justice Faji admitted each of them to bail in the sum of N10m with two sureties in like sum.

Among other conditions, the judge barred the defendants from travelling outside the country, with an order that the EFCC should notify the Nigeria Immigration Service about them.

The judge gave them 10 days to meet the bail conditions, failing which they would be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services.

Gap stock surged 35% in early trading on Friday after the clothing giant struck a 10-year partnership with Kanye West and his Yeezy fashion brand.

West will design a “Yeezy Gap” clothing line that will be sold in stores and online next year.

Gap is targeting $1 billion in annual sales from “Yeezy Gap” in five years’ time, The New York Times reported .

.The celebrity rapper, music producer, and entrepreneur will design a “Yeezy Gap” line of affordable adult and children’s clothing that will be sold in Gap stores and online next year.

The stock-price increase added about $1.3 billion to Gap’s market capitalization, lifting it to north of $5 billion as of 9:56 a.m. ET.

However, Gap stock is still down about 20% this year.

Gap, which also owns Old Navy and Banana Republic, is hoping the line will generate $1 billion in annual sales after five years, The New York Times reported . The Gap division as a whole earned $4.6 billion in net sales last year, full-year earnings show .

West already collaborates with Adidas on Yeezy sneakers. Bank of America valued Yeezy’s shoe business at $3 billion and expected it to earn $1.3 billion in sales last year, The New York Times said.

Rapper West worked at a Gap store as a teenager and told The Cut in 2015 that he would like to be “the Steve Jobs of the Gap.”

West will receive royalties and possible equity tied to the sales performance of Yeezy Gap.

Kanye West has long been open about his desire to make clothing for the masses, and now it seems like he’s getting a real chance to do just that. On Thursday, West inked a 10-year deal with Gap to produce a new clothing line called “Yeezy Gap,” which will be introduced in stores in 2021.

The line is expected to sell for typical Gap prices of less than $100 per item, according to Business of Fashion, which means it will be far more accessibly-priced than the Yeezy clothing line that West first presented at New York Fashion Week in 2015. The partnership will showcase “modern, elevated basics for men, women and kids at accessible price points,” according to a statement from Yeezy

The partnership looks like a win from both angles: West has been speaking about his desire to work with Gap for years, telling Style.com in 2015, “I’d like to be the Steve Jobs of the Gap… I’m not talking about a capsule. I’m talking about full Hedi Slimane creative control of the Gap.” West also worked at a Gap store as a teenager in Chicago.

UPDATE, Friday, June 26: West announced via Twitter that Mowalola Ungesi, Nigerian British designer of the eponymous label Mowalola, will be joining Yeezy Gap as design director. Ungesi’s designs were recently worn by West and his family in a photo posted to Kim Kardashian West’s Instagram.

In line with global standards for aviation operations in view of Covid-19, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has conducted simulation excercise at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja to test all the protocols designed to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 at the Airports ahead of flight resumption.

During the simulation excercise which took place at about 8am ,passengers went through all the protocols before boarding the Aero Contractor operated on a B737 marked NG110 flight at about 11:20am with 51 passengers on board.

Recall that Nigerian airports have been shutdown for over three months to avert spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The aviation sector is now preparing to reopen again.

During the simulation excercise , 1.5m physical distance markings, two hand wash areas and bags disinfecting area were observed. Hand sanitizers were also placed in strategic locations in addition to which Port Health workers were seen taking temperature levels of intending passengers.

Passengers were urged to follow all protocols at all times.

Speaking after the exercise, the Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika said: “The flight simulation is to achieve five things: firstly it is to maintain physical distance with each other, secondly, it is to wear protective materials such as face mask and face shield, thirdly, It is to maintain hygiene, fourthly, it is to clean the area and surfaces and that is a function of the robot itself apart from identifying the passengers. Lastly, it is to also seat in a environment that is clean and hygienic maintaining physical distancing. So we can board the aircraft decontaminated so we don’t contaminate others. All of the things that has happened here is to ensure we don’t spread COVID-19 19” he explained.

He added that the authorities “are ensuring efficient facilitation of passengers so time is not wasted in adopting the new normal.”

“We will announce all the protocols again before opening. But you need to be at the airport three hours ahead of your flight” he stated.

“The experience is quite nice but it takes a bit of time which is why you will need to be at the airport three hours before your local flight.

“For international flight, we may do five hours” he said.

Sirika further said that “we have demostrated here in a mock manner a sick person. You saw how the area was condoned off, the sick taken away to safe area and the scene disinfected. You saw the health workers in their PPEs come around to evacuate the sick person. All these is to adhere to the new normal he said”.

“You also saw that if you are served tea or beverages, you pick it yourself in a disposable cup” he said.

“Everything for me in this demo excercise worked very well. We came and began maintaining physical distance right from the outside. All the markings are there, and we respected that. During the checking procedure, we were shielded from the check-in officials, we got our boarding passes and during boarding, we detached our boarding passes and dropped the other end without physical contact. So contacts with people have been reduced so we can remain safe” he further explained.

Explaining the protocol inside the flight he said: “There will also be social distancing in the aircraft. But new ideas are coming on board on how to remain seated to make the carbon economical okay and to ensure we don’t infect each other. Those new norms are coming and we will implement them in such a way that flights are profitable. WHO and ICAO have developed protocols of the sitting.”

Texas on Thursday halted steps to reopen its economy after a sharp rise in coronavirus cases that threatens to undo earlier efforts to quell the disease.

The number of new coronavirus infections is approaching record daily levels in the US, with more than 35,900 cases recorded in the past 24 hours, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Texas was among the most aggressive states in reopening in early June after months of lockdown.

“The State of Texas will pause any further phases to open Texas as the state responds to the recent increase in positive COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations,” Governor Greg Abbott’s office announced in a statement.

“The last thing we want to do as a state is go backwards and close down businesses. This temporary pause will help our state corral the spread,” Abbott said, asking residents to wear masks and respect social distancing guidelines.

Abbott is an ally of Donald Trump, but his latest announcement was in stark contrast to the president, who has tried to signal that the virus crisis is largely over.

The US death toll is over 121,000, by far the world’s highest.

Three northeastern states that made significant progress beating back the pandemic — New York, New Jersey and Connecticut — on Wednesday urged visitors arriving from US hotspots such as Texas, Florida and Alabama to quarantine themselves.

Several states in the South and West are suffering what White House advisor and top scientist Anthony Fauci described as “disturbing” new surges in infections.

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals said in a 2-1 ruling on Wednesday that the federal judge overseeing the sentencing of former national security adviser Michael Flynn must accept the Justice Department’s request to drop charges.

Why it matters: It could mark the end of a long-running legal fight that began with Flynn pleading guilty to lying to the FBI in December 2017 about his contacts with the Russian ambassador during the Trump administration’s transition into office.

The backdrop: The Justice Department under Attorney General Bill Barr moved to dismiss the charges against Flynn in May, following a review that alleged prosecutorial misconduct by the FBI agents who had interviewed Flynn.

D.C. District Judge Emmet Sullivan pumped the brakes on the case and sought to hear from outside parties on whether he should accept the government’s motion.

Flynn’s lawyers subsequently asked the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to order Judge Sullivan to drop the case.

In the meantime, an ex-judge appointed by Sullivan to review the case issued a scathing brief alleging that Flynn committed perjury and accusing the DOJ of a “corrupt, politically motivated” dismissal.

Worth noting: The majority opinion was written by Circuit Judge Neomi Rao, who was appointed in November 2018 to fill the seat vacated by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

What’s next: Sullivan could ask the full D.C. Court of Appeals to vote whether to rehear the panel decision.

What they’re saying:

Because legal errors ordinarily may be corrected on appeal, a writ of mandamus is proper only if there is “no other adequate means to attain … relief.” Although “an abstract concern with the separation of powers,” does not rise to the level of an irreparable injury, we have found the requisite harm as a matter of course when a party alleges the district court’s action usurps a specific executive power.

In this case, the district court’s actions will result in specific harms to the exercise of the Executive Branch’s exclusive prosecutorial power. The contemplated proceedings would likely require the Executive to reveal the internal deliberative process behind its exercise of prosecutorial discretion, interfering with the Article II charging authority. Thus, the district court’s appointment of the amicus and demonstrated intent to scrutinize the reasoning and motives of the Department of Justice constitute irreparable harms that cannot be remedied on appeal.

Police in Nigeria have rescued 300 people they say were locked in a rice-processing factory and forced to work throughout a coronavirus lockdown.

Police in Nigeria have rescued 300 people they say were locked in a rice-processing factory and forced to work throughout a coronavirus lockdown.

From the end of March the men were allegedly not allowed to leave the mill in the northern city of Kano.

The workers were promised an additional $13 (£10) a month on top of their $72 monthly salary – those who did not accept were threatened with the sack.

Five managers at the Indian-owned mill have been arrested.

The company, called Popular Farms, has not responded to BBC requests for comment.

Police spokesman Abdullahi Haruna told the BBC that the plant had now been shut down and the owners were being investigated for “holding the men against their will”.

Some of the men say were forced to work most of the time during their incarceration, with little food.

“We were allowed to rest for only a short time, no prayers were allowed, no family visits,” 28-year-old Hamza Ibrahim, one of those rescued, told the BBC’s Mansur Abubakar in Kano.

‘Living like animals’

The police were tipped off about the men’s plight after one of them called a human rights organisation.

“What I saw was heart breaking. Where the company kept these people to live isn’t fit for animals,” Karibu Yahaya Kabara of the Global Human Rights Network told the BBC.

“Their meals weren’t enough and there were no drugs for those that took ill,” he said.Mr Kabara said his organisation was taking up the case to ensure that the men got justice.

Nigerian businesses were asked to close up shop in late March as part of government guidelines to halt the spread of coronavirus.

The country has more than 20,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus.

Lagos, in the south, remains the epicentre of the virus, but Kano – Nigeria’s second-biggest city and the capital of Kano state, has the most cases in the north.

Lockdowns elsewhere in the country have been eased – but in Kano people are still only allowed to go out on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to buy food at stipulated times

Popular Farms workers say they were asked to double their hours in February as their employers wanted to stockpile in preparation for a shutdown.

By March they say it was decided to keep the plant going by offering them more money – or the sack – to stay on working.

However, having agreed to stay on the workers discovered they had been prevented from ever leaving the mill.
