Women’s World Cup 2023: Brazil withdraws bid to host and pledges support for Colombia

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) says the government did not consider it wise to offer financial guarantees asked for by FIFA

Brazil has withdrawn its candidacy to host the 2023 Women’s World Cup, citing financial fears in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) says the government did not consider it wise to offer financial guarantees asked for by FIFA.

Brazil has hosted a string of international sporting competitions in recent years including the World Cup in 2014, the Olympic Games in 2016 and the Copa America in 2019 – and the CBF also felt they were outsiders to host yet another major event.

Brazil will instead join the other South American nations and support Colombia’s bid to stage the tournament.

Brazil’s withdrawal means Colombia, Japan and a joint bid from Australia and New Zealand are the remaining contenders to host the 32-team tournament.

The winning bid will be decided by FIFA on June 25.

Colombia, who have qualified for two Women’s World Cups in 2011 and 2015, are bidding to become the first South American nation to host the competition.

Manchester City’s appeal against a two-year ban from European competition will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) from Monday in a case of wide-reaching repercussions.

City are accused of overstating sponsorship revenue to hide that they had not complied with UEFA’s financial fair play (FFP) rules between 2012 and 2016 and were also handed a 30 million euro ($34 million, £27 million) fine.

UEFA’s case was prompted when German magazine Der Spiegel published a series of leaked emails in 2018 that purported to show how City manufactured extra sponsorship revenue from a series of companies with connections to the club’s Abu Dhabi-based owner Sheikh Mansour.

Under the Sheikh’s ownership, City’s fortunes have been transformed from perennially living in the shadow of local rivals Manchester United to winning four Premier League titles in the past eight years.

However, billions of investment in players and managers has not yet been able to deliver the club’s first ever Champions League title.

City are still involved in this season’s competition and will be allowed to compete should the 2019/20 edition of Champions League return in August no matter the outcome of the appeal.

– Financial hit –

But a two-season ban from the competition would represent a huge blow to the club’s prestige, finances and hope of hanging onto manager Pep Guardiola and key players like Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling.

“Two years would be long. One year is something I might be able to cope with,” De Bruyne told Het Laatste Nieuws last month.

City banked 93 million euros from prize money and television rights alone by reaching the quarter-finals of last season’s Champions League.

The added loss of gate receipts and commercial revenue would make it extremely difficult for the club to meet FFP regulations in the future without cutting costs.

City have steadfastly refuted UEFA’s allegations.

“Based on our experience and our perception, this seems to be less about justice and more about politics,” said CEO of the City Football Group Ferran Soriano.

UEFA has been under pressure, most publicly from La Liga president Javier Tebas, to impose a harder line on clubs backed by states, like City and Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain.

European football’s governing body also have plenty riding on the case. Lose the appeal and the future of UEFA’s FFP regulations will be called into question.

– Premier League impact –

The hearing will be held by videoconference due to coronavirus restrictions from Monday to Wednesday.

If no verdict is immediately announced after the hearing, the decision “could be made during the month of July,” said Matthieu Reeb, secretary general of CAS.

Even if City’s appeal to CAS fails, the English champions could present a further appeal before the Swiss Federal Court.

A delayed outcome would leave a cloud hanging over the return of the Premier League season.

City seem certain to secure Champions League qualification on the field with a 12-point lead over fifth-placed Manchester United.

If they are excluded, fifth would be good enough for the riches of next season’s Champions League, which are all the more valuable during the economic crisis caused by coronavirus.

Just six points separate United from Crystal Palace in 11th leaving plenty to play for in the final nine games of the season once the Premier League restarts on June 17.

Chelsea have offered a £200,000-a-week contract to Werner; Germany international has €55m (£49.4m) release clause which expires on June 15

Chelsea have offered a £200,000-a-week contract to Werner, who also interested Liverpool and Manchester United.

He had publicly indicated his preference to move to Premier League leaders Liverpool but they were unwilling to pay the release clause in the current climate.

That allowed Chelsea to move in for their number one forward target, and the 24-year-old is happy to play for Frank Lampard’s side. His priority has always been to sign for a Champions League club where he can play regularly.

Werner is set to join Hakim Ziyech, who is joining from Ajax for £33m on July 1, as new additions at Stamford Bridge this summer following their transfer ban being lifted by FIFA in December last year.

Chelsea were unable to sign players last year and opted not to bring in any acquisitions in January, instead focusing on their main targets this summer.

The club are also interested in bringing in a new left-back, with Leicester’s Ben Chilwell their number one target.

“Werner’s name has long been linked with Liverpool, but they were not the only Premier League club said to be monitoring him.

“It is hardly surprising that he is a player in demand. Over the course of the last four years with RB Leipzig, the 24-year-old has established himself as one of the most exciting young players in the Bundesliga.

“This season has been his best yet, with 31 goals scored in 40 games so far, taking his overall total for RB Leipzig to 92 in 154 appearances. For the German national side, he boasts a total of 11 goals in 29 games.

“His RB Leipzig tally for this season includes four goals in the Champions League, one of which came during Leipzig’s 1-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in February.

“The majority of Werner’s goals have come from the central striking position this season, but he is tactically flexible – RB Leipzig have used nine different formations in the Bundesliga this season – and he is also comfortable playing in wide positions, particularly when cutting inside from the left.

“Another factor in Werner’s favour is his age. The forward has already amassed closed to 300 senior appearances since making his professional debut for Stuttgart in 2013, but he only turned 24 in March.”

Kanye West has offered to fully pay for the college tuition fees of Gianna Floyd, the daughter of George Floyd, who was killed last Monday at the hands of four Minneapolis Police officers.

Gianna is six years old and was recently seen on her uncle’s shoulders saying: ‘Daddy changed the world.’ Her mother said she told Gianna the father died because he couldn’t breathe.

West has set up a 529 college savings fund as part of $2million worth of donations to African American people who have recently been killed by police and white people.

West is giving ‘to the families and legal teams’ fighting for Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, TMZ reported.

Arbery was killed by white men who hunted him down and shot him while he was out jogging in Georgia. They said he fit the description of a burglary suspect.

One man who filmed the killing drove behind Arbery while Greg McMichael, 64, and his son Travis McMichael, 34 waited ahead in their truck before shooting him. Prosecutors claim Greg yelled: ‘F**king n****r’ after the execution.

Taylor was killed when police broke into her Louisville, Kentucky apartment and sprayed bullets around the place while she sleeping. They said they were looking for a male drug dealer, even though that man was already in custody.

Michael White, a U.S. Navy veteran who was imprisoned in Iran since 2018, was released on Thursday and heading back to the United States, the Iranian foreign ministry and his family said in a statement.

“For the past 683 days my son, Michael, has been held hostage in Iran by the IRGC (Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps) and I have been living a nightmare,” said Joanne White, mother of Michael White. “I am blessed to announce that the nightmare is over, and my son is safely on his way home.”

White’s mother expressed gratitude to the Trump administration, the State Department, the Swiss government that had relayed messages back and forth between Tehran and Washington, and to former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson for working to secure her son’s release.

President Donald Trump posted a message about White’s release on Twitter.

“I am to happy announce that Navy Veteran, Michael White, who has been detained by Iran for 683 days, is on a Swiss plane that just left Iranian Airspace. We expect him to be home with his family in America very soon,” Trump wrote. “I will never stop working to secure the release of all Americans held hostage overseas! Thank you Switzerland for your great assistance.”

The U.S. special envoy for Iran, Brian Hook, will be greeting White in Zurich and will accompany him back to the United States on an American plane, according to two U.S. officials.

Hopes for White’s release were raised this week when the U.S. deported Iranian scientist Sirius Asgari after acquitting him of federal charges of trading secrets related to his research.

Despite the auspicious timing, both U.S. and Iranian officials denied Asgari’s release was part of any prisoner swap.

White, who was in fragile health and had been undergoing treatment for cancer before his detention in July 2018, was granted medical furlough in March due to the coronavirus outbreak.

He had been arrested after visiting a girlfriend in Iran whom he had met online. White was sentenced to 13 years in prison after he was convicted of insulting the country’s top leader and displaying a private photo publicly.

“This should have and could have been done earlier, but I am glad and relieved that Mike is on his way home to get treated and rejoin Joanne and his family,” said Bill Richardson, the former New Mexico governor and U.N. ambassador, who had worked on behalf of the family to get White released.

“COVID-19 presents countries around the world, including our own, with an unprecedented challenge. The health and wellbeing of prisoners are the responsibility of the country holding them,” Richardson said in a statement.

White’s pre-existing medical conditions “made him extremely vulnerable” to COVID-19 to the disease, Richardson said. After he was given a medical furlough, White was moved from a prison and transferred to a hotel, though he remained in Iranian custody, according to Richardson.

Lewis Hamilton has spoken of his anger following the death of George Floyd, which has sparked protests across the United States.

Floyd died in Minneapolis on May 25 after being arrested by a police officer who pinned the unarmed 46-year-old to the ground for several minutes by kneeling on his neck.

Protests in the aftermath of Floyd’s death have stretched into the eighth day, while President Trump vowed to deploy the military if the violence can’t be contained.

“This past week has been so dark,” Hamilton wrote on social media.

“I have failed to keep hold of my emotions. I have felt so much anger, sadness and disbelief in what my eyes have seen.

“I am completely overcome with rage at the sight of such blatant disregard for the lives of our people. The injustice that we are seeing our brothers and sisters face all over the world time and time again is disgusting, and MUST stop.”

Hamilton has spoken out a number of times over the past week.

The six-time Formula One world champion called on the “biggest stars” of his sport who “stay silent in the midst of injustice,” and said in a separate post that he “do[es] not stand with those looting and burning buildings but those who protest peacefully.”

F1 has since released a post saying it “stand[s] with all those fighting against racism in any form,” and several drivers have also spoken out.

“Unfortunately, America is not the only place where racism lives and we continue to fail as humans when we cannot stand up for what is right,” Hamilton’s post released on Tuesday continued.

“Please do not sit in silence, no matter the colour of your skin. Black Lives Matter.”

Last week, it was confirmed that the Formula One season will begin with a double-header in Austria on July 5. Racing has been suspended since March amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden blasted President Donald Trump and denounced “systemic racism” Monday as he sought to reignite his White House campaign after weeks of coronavirus sequestration.

Biden, who had met with anti-racism protesters on Sunday, took to Twitter to express his fury at his opponent’s response to the protests that have broken out nationwide over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of a white Minnesota police officer.

“He’s using the American military against the American people,” Biden tweeted after the president vowed to order an army crackdown on civil unrest gripping the United States.

“He tear-gassed peaceful protesters and fired rubber bullets. For a photo,” Biden wrote, referring to Trump’s decision to use law enforcement — including military police — to clear protesters from outside the White House so he could pose for photographs at a riot-damaged church nearby.

“For our children, for the very soul of our country, we must defeat him,” the former vice president said.

Biden also announced in a campaign statement he would speak Tuesday morning in Philadelphia “on the civil unrest facing communities across America.”

The speech will be just his third public appearance since the COVID-19 pandemic began in mid-March.

After facing accusations that he was out of touch by spending too much time at home in virus lockdown, the 77-year-old Biden seems to have gotten another wind and is ready to step up the pace of his campaign as restrictions relax.

– ‘Systemic racism’ –

In a meeting with African-American religious and political leaders on Monday in which Floyd’s death figured prominently, and speaking later in a virtual town hall, Biden accused Republican Trump of fomenting racist hate and letting minorities suffer most in the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“The band-aid has been ripped off this pandemic and this president,” Biden said, speaking at the Bethel AME Church in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.

“Nobody can pretend any longer what this is all about.”

The church meeting was the second time that Biden, who served as President Barack Obama’s vice president, had participated in person in a public gathering since mid-March when the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly paralyzed his campaign.

“Hate just hides; doesn’t go away. And when you have somebody in power who breathes oxygen into the hate under the rocks, it comes out from under the rocks,” Biden said of Trump.

“It matters what the president says,” Biden added. “It encourages people to bring out the vitriol.”

Speaking later at a virtual town hall Biden returned to the theme of racism.

“There is systemic racism, white supremacy, it’s real,” he said. “You see it. I think we all see it but African-Americans see more clearly.”

Floyd’s death “invoked the full weight of our history … how black lives have been devalued by society. And it’s not only intolerable but people are angry.”

Biden’s remarks came after days and nights of demonstrations and riots around the country over the death of Floyd, filmed as he was pleading for air while his neck was under the white police officer’s knee.

Biden said he had spoken with Floyd’s family during the past few days.

During a virtual fundraiser, late Monday Biden said that Floyd’s brother Philonise told him: “Promise me. Promise me we’ll have justice. Promise me people will be held accountable. Promise me that.”

– Promise for first 100 days –

At the Bethel AME church, which has a black congregation, Biden wore a mask and took notes after a prayer was said.

Leaders and congregation members criticised Trump but also challenged Biden to do more for African Americans if he wins the White House in the November 3 election.

Democratic House Representative Blunt Rochester, in emotional, impassioned remarks, said she appreciated Biden for “showing up.”

“For those who are out there complaining, we’ve got a president that ain’t even showing up, that doesn’t even care,” she said. “Come on.”

But State Senator Darius Brown noted that African-Americans did not gain economically during the eight years of Biden’s vice presidency.

“We’re here not only to love you but to push you” for more support to the Democratic Party’s African-American base, he said.

Biden said he would work in his first hundred days of office to address the needs of black Americans.

“I promise you… that we’re going to make sure that the economic recovery deals with the institutional structures and institutional racism, but also economic structures that need to be fixed,” he said.

Biden also promised that, if elected, he would create a police oversight commission in his first hundred days in office.

Several people urged Biden to choose an African-American as his vice-presidential running mate.

“I promise you there are multiple African-American candidates who are being considered,” he said.

Biden is popular among black voters, a key electorate for any Democrat hoping to win the presidency.

But he is not immune to criticism.

In May, he provoked backlash when he told a radio host “you ain’t black” if he was thinking of voting for Trump. Biden quickly apologized after the interview was aired.
